The coxed eight competition of the Olympic is one of the most traditional and most expected races in the world of rowing. At the Mexico 1968 Olympic Games it proved why, offering the crowd some "Olympic firsts".
The regatta was the first Olympic regatta that saw West Germany (FRG) and East Germany (GDR) competing separately, with the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) taking the gold medal.
Despite having won Olympic gold in other races throughout history, in this same race Australia achieved its best result ever in the Olympic men's coxed eight competition, with a silver medal. The Aussies would win a second silver medal in this event as the hosts at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games.
Finishing in third position, the Soviet Union took the bronze medal.
